Swedish development cooperation focuses on poverty reduction and support for sub-Saharan Africa. In 2023, Sweden's total official development assistance (ODA) was $5.6 billion (preliminary data), an increase from the previous year, accounting for 0.91% of the country's gross national income that year.

The Netherlands announcedreduceDevelopment Budget 2025

On September 17, 2024, the Dutch government announced that it would provide 3.6 billion euros (about 3.9 billion U.S. dollars) in budget funds to the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Development Aid in 2025, and cut 300 million euros (about 300 million U.S. dollars) from the 2025 development cooperation budget.

The Dutch cabinet stressed the priority of supporting development areas in which the Netherlands has expertise and economic interests, such as water management, food security and health. The draft budget also plans to cut the budget of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) by 937 million euros (about 1 billion US dollars), about 8%.

German Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development Svenja Schulze expressed frustration with the budget cuts. Svenja Schulze said that most of the 2025 budget has been locked in long-term agreements, leaving little room for maneuver. As a result, short-term projects and multilateral funding may be shelved, and non-governmental organization-related budgets may also be affected. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock also said that the current budget level is not enough to cope with numerous global crises.

(Ahram Online/Photo)

Germany isOECDThe second largest development cooperationDonor countries.GermanyThe Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development is in overall chargemostOfficial Development Assistance.
